This case study is about how we ourselves use our own technology and run an egg vending machine. Vending by JSR is a part of a wider run business called JSR Services. JSR services is a 30-year-old family run business who specialise in free range egg production. As our business was expanding and we were building more chicken sheds, we were looking to offer our eggs to the Local community’s surrounding our sheds. However, we were not wanting to use an honesty box, we did not have the staff to man an egg stall all day and were not wanting to commit to opening up a whole shop. Therefor it seemed like there was no feasible way we could offer our eggs to members of the community. That was until we came across locker style vending that was growing increasingly popular in Europe and other parts of the world. Although traditional spiral vending machines are not suitable for selling eggs, we recognised that locker style vending machines will work perfectly to house our eggs along with other produce. We contacted the European suppliers and got our hands on the UK’s first locker vending machine.
The first machine we installed onto our site in Liff was an older style Roesler machine. We stocked our Roesler machine with trays of what we call Bakers eggs. These are eggs with an irregular shape or colour that supermarkets downgraded and paid us less for. There is nothing wrong with these eggs, therefor we stocked them into our machine at a good price for the customer while also maximising our profits. People began to come from the local community as they were interested in the concept of buying products from a vending machine and continued to shop at our machine regularly as they liked the idea of buying fresh products at an affordable rate.
As the vending technology advanced, we also moved on with our machine. When we started suppling Innovends ‘Lock Blox’ vending machines, we substituted the old with the new. Letting our customers use the more user friendly 15” touch screen display to buy their products while also allowing us to track our stock and see machine sales using the Remote Monitoring system. With our Lock Blox machine allowing customers to buy multiple products, we took advantage of this and started offering different variations of our eggs. We now offer our double yoker eggs, jumbo eggs, organic eggs, bakers eggs to the customers in packages of 6, 12 and trays of 30. We also upgraded the machine by adding extensions like the payter contact less systems, to offer customers the choice to use their contactless payment options as opposed to just using cash.
What our machine allows us to do is test out new vending technology before we offer it to our customers. Whether it was payter contactless extensions or any system updates to the Graphic User Interface (GUI), we have been able to test it out on our machine before we offer updates to our customers. Ensuring that nothing unexpected happens when we alter a customer’s vending machine.
Our own Locker Vending Machine has been a huge success over the last 5 years. It has allowed us to sell our own eggs by a means that we can manage, allowed us to safely test any system or software updates done by our developers before updating other customers machines and has provided the local community’s the opportunity to buy freshly produced free range eggs at an affordable rate.
